Even though many people associate chiropractic care with the treatment of back pain, we can also treat headaches. We know that there are numerous people who suffer from headaches regularly. We want to give all of our patients the ability to treat their headaches holistically.

The Difference Between a Headache and a Migraine

The difference between a headache and a migraine is that a migraine is a type of headache. There are multiple types of headaches, of which migraine is one. A migraine typically presents with nausea and vomiting. While this can occur with other headaches as well, vomiting is typically associated closely with all types of migraine headaches. Other headaches might lead to pressure, tingling, numbness, and a vice-grip sensation around the head.

An Overview of the Types of Headaches

Tension Headaches: These are the most common types of headaches. These headaches typically result from muscle tightness that extends from the back or neck, pulling on the muscles in the scalp. When the muscles of the scalp are pulled tight, people often complain that they feel like their head is being squeezed by a "pincer."

Cluster Headache: Of the types of headaches, this one is the most unusual. In a cluster headache, one or more of the nerves that supply one half of the face become irritated. The result is a variety of somatic symptoms that influence only one half of the face and skull. Those who develop a cluster headache tend to develop twitching, tear production, and sweating on only one side of the face. This comes in addition to pain and discomfort.

Concussion:  A concussion is a common injury that can lead to the development of a headache. A loss of consciousness is not required for someone to be diagnosed with a concussion. Those who suffer a concussion will often complain of irritation from bright lights and loud noises.

The last type of headache is called a migraine.

The Different Types of Migraine Headaches

There are two types of migraine headaches. They are:

Migraine With Aura: The first type of migraine headache is called a migraine with aura. Those who suffer from a migraine with aura will have some sort of signal that they are going to develop a migraine headache. This might be a certain smell, flashing lights, or a "sixth sense." Shortly after, a migraine headache sets in.

Migraine Without AuraIn contrast, migraine without aura does not lead to the development of any prophetic signal. Instead, a migraine headache develops just like any other headache.

Some of the most common symptoms of both types of headaches include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Irritation caused by bright lights and loud noises
  • The inability to go to work or attend school
  • Trouble focusing or concentrating
  • A loss of appetite

Some people develop migraines that last for a few hours. Other migraines might last for more than a day.
